Everyday interruptions can be a huge barrier to effective home office time management.
The key to controlling interruptions is to know what they are and whether they are necessary, and to plan for them in your daily schedule. My quick tips below will help you do just that.
- Catch your breath for moment after you have been interrupted so you can get back into the same energy you were in before you broke your concentration.
- Simple yet effective: Let people know when you are available. and when you are not.
- Schedule regular check-in times for the individuals you talk to most often. Ask these people to keep a running list of things that they need to discuss, so you can cover all the points at one time. And, force yourself to do the same.
There are interruptions that, no matter how hard you try, you simply cannot control.
Most people are happy to schedule a more convenient time, but when this does not work, quickly set the parameters by saying something like, "I only have five minutes to talk about this right now," and stick to it, then if needed, schedule a time to finish the conversation.

I do not work on Sundays. I do, however, take about 15 to 30 minutes out of the day to get my goals planned out for the week.
I’m addicted to planners! My long standing affair has been with MomAgenda. They offer really cool planner book styles and filler pages that make planning fashionably fun. I add the weekly appointments for me and my family, block out teaching time, work time and household chore and errand time.
Here’s the most important thing that I have learned: “Do not blur the allotted time blocks! You will find that multitasking will mentally burn you out at a much faster rate, plus it’s not respectful to your family, clients or yourself.”
I have standard work hours….and I stick to them. This is REALLY important for home-based workers. Though, some days have different hours than others, I still make sure I stick to them so I will always have time to kick back and relax.
I also get up about 30 minutes before my son. This gives me some quite time for prayer and meditation which clears the cob-webs out of my brain. During this time,
I will also journal my business goals and ideas.
- Keep a written log of your daily interruptions.
- At the end of each day analyze whether the interruption was valid or not. Probably not.
- While on an important task, use your caller ID to screen calls, or turn your ringer off for a certain amount of time and have your voice mail take messages for you.
Do you ever feel like you are working and working but still not getting much accomplished? Frustrating, I know. As a full-time work-at-homeschooling mom, I have learned a few things on this subject. Here are my top home office time management tips.May it inspire you!
